Festivities were held Saturday at Pio Pico State Historic Park, on the corner of Whittier and Pioneer boulevards. “Coming Home to Pio Pico” was a dual celebration of Cinco de Mayo and the birthday of P o de Jesus Pico, the last Mexican governor of California, who was born May 5, 1801, and died in 1894. The event featured Roberto Garza portraying the late Gov. Pio Pico, 1800s children’s activities, food and beverages for sale, a cake-cutting ceremony, historical re-enactors and Mexican music and dancing. P o de Jesus Pico IV, was one of California’s most fascinating historical figures. Today, “El Ranchito” is the only remaining property left of the original ranch. – From staff reportslast_img read more
